The principal GAG in PSGAG is chondroitin sulfate. It is a chemical found in human and animal cartilage and soft connective tissue and is usually found attached to proteins as part of a proteoglycan. It is important veterinarians and horse owners understand that all GAG products are not equal; And what are GAGs?<\/p>\n<p>Glycosaminoglycans are polysaccharides made up of repeating disaccharide units and are an important component of many connective tissues including tissues in the equine joint.<\/p>\n<p>The most important GAGs in the equine joint are <strong>Hyaluronic Acid<\/strong>, <strong>Chondroitin sulfate,<\/strong> and keratin sulfate.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><strong>Hyaluronic Acid<\/strong> (HA) is a non-sulfated GAG that is produced by cells in the synovial membrane and released into the synovial fluid. Here these long-chain molecules function as the barrier lubricant of the synovial membrane and joint capsule and help to form the synovial barrier.
